35 years in jail for raping 7-year-old girl in Kalaiya

A 28-year-old man has been sentenced for 35 years in jail and confiscated his properties for raping 7-year-old girl by the District Court today.

Issuing his verdict on the case of Puja Saha’s rape and subsequent death,

Judge Lipta Bahadur Thapa ruled that Kanhaiya Lal Gupta of Kalaiya-4 was guilty of the crimes.

Gupta faces life imprisonment which includes 20-year term and confiscation of all his properties for the murder, and 15-year term for the rape, according to Roshan Bhattarai, an official at the District Court.

The Court told Gupta to pay Rs. 2 lakh to the victim’s family as compensation.

Saha had disappeared from Dahi Bazaar of Kalaiya on the evening of February 20. She was found in an open field near a local school in Kalaiya-6 in a very critical condition after her rape the following morning.

The victim had died at Kathmandu-based Kanti Bal Hospital on March 8.

Police had arrested Gupta as a suspect on February 22.

Displaying the victims body, locals and activists had launched an agitation in Bara demanding justice to Saha and urging the authorities to prevent rape of girls.

The victim was cremated after a five-point agreement was struck between the agitators and the local authorities on Saturday.
