Matya festival in Lalitpur today
Matya festival is one of the festival celebrated in the Newar community with lots of joy and enthusiam in Lalitpur. It falls in the month of Shrawan every year.
It is celebrated tomorrow of Gai Jatra. Those who have demise thourgh out the whole year. The relatives and their family member remember pray for their departed soul. People also participate in this Jatra to be a part of it and to preserve the culture and tradition and to enjoy.
People also belief that on the day of Gai Jatra, some tried to disturb the meditation of Lord Buddha and on the next day, rally was organized to accept the defeat as they would not wake Lord Buddha from his meditation. Matya in Newari also known as the defeat. And some believe, as in this rally, most of people lit butter lamps and other made from strings, So the name is called “Matya” or Mata taya which in Newari means putting light.
In this Jatra, people visit all the buddha stupas in the Patan and offer homeage. Some people published their beloved family members photo along with different prays and other offers coins, ruppees, sweets as according to their desire.
This Jatra starts way too early at 4 A.M on morning and concludes at the evening around 7P.M. The participates has to walk all those painful hours and cover the distance as taken by guwaju(head priest of the jatra).
