Self-immolation::A man who burned himself

A monk set himself on Fire

I don’t know how it feels to be an exiled from one’s country. I have seen many people along the side of Bagmati river and many other places from the childhood. The refugees from different country like Bhutan and Tibet came to Nepal and living on the bank of rivers and some free places.

The pain of living an exiled life is simple an uncertainity to the future. You can not do anything as you don’t owe citizenship.

May be such pain and frustration triggered many such Tibetan people to practice Self-immolation in the different part of the world. According to the Tibetan advocacy groups the number of Tibetans in China who have set themselves on fire to protest Beijing’s rule has reached 100.

Recently a young man named Thundup Dopchen on his mid 20s set himself on fire on the premises of the Boudhanath Stupa in 13th February, 2013. As he was burning like a fire ball, he ran about 50 meters shouting the slogans to free Tibet from China after then he collapsed.

Dopchen entered The Golden Eye Cafe on the premises of Boudhanath Stupa  at around 8:25 am and went straight away to the restaurant washroom where he doused himself with petrol and lit himself on fire before stepping out of the cafe.

Then police put out the flames and rushed into the TU Teaching Hospital. And at 11 pm the same night, he died.Doctors attending to Dopchen said that he died due to multiple organ failure as about 90 percent of his body had suffered burns. He was receiving treatment on a ventilator in the hospital.

The self-immolation bid, the 100th since 2009, in a wave of protests against what Tibetans say ‘suppressive Chinese rule’, coincidedwith the February 13 that marks ‘100 years of proclamation of Tibet’s independence’ by the 13th Dalai Lama.

“This grim milestone should be a source of shame to the Chinese authorities who are responsible and to the world leaders who have yet to show any leadership in response to the ongoing crisis in Tibet,” said Stephanie Brigden, the director of Free Tibet.

Self-immolation has become a desperate form of protest in recent years for ethnic Tibetans unhappy with Chinese rule, and it shows no sign of abating.

Of the 100 Tibetans who have now set themselves on fire in China, at least 82 are believed to have died from the act, according to the International Campaign for Tibet.

Self-immolation began as a form of protest among Tibetans in China in February 2009, when a young monk set himself on fire in Aba. In March 2011, another young monk followed in his footsteps, becoming the first to die.
